Reception - 4 to 5 years
Our curriculum guidance for the foundation stage sets out six areas of learning covering children’s physical, intellectual, emotional and social development.
Personal, social and emotional development
Children at Cheeky Monkeys are encouraged to feel that they are valued members of the class and school community so that they develop a strong self image and sense of self-esteem. Positive attitudes towards learning and confidence in one's ability to be a successful learner are promoted.
Social skills are fostered to encourage children to work together, work through problems together and develop friendships. Additionally, children are encouraged to engage in small groups and develop their attending skills through task completion.
Communication, language and literacy
Our school is a multi cultural community and we respect individuality. Although we use English as our language of instruction, we encourage children to continue to develop their home language through role play and other activities. Children explore, enjoy and learn about and use words and text in a broad range of contexts and experience a rich variety of books.
Mathematical development
Children become confident and competent in learning and using key skills. Children develop their maths understanding through counting, sorting, matching, patterns and through working with numbers, shapes, space and measurement.
Knowledge and understanding of the world
Children develop the crucial knowledge skills and understanding that help make sense of the world and form the foundation for later work in Science, History, Geography and computer skills. Children have the opportunity to solve problems, make decisions, experiment, predict, plan and question.
Physical development
Children engage in both fine and gross motor activities through activities that improve their co-ordination, control, manipulation and movement. Cheeky monkeys provide a variety of activities such as yoga, soccer, dancing and games.
Creative development
Children explore and share their ideas and feeling through a variety of art, music, role play, dance and imaginative play.
